The church maturity matrix (CMM) is one tool to help determine the level of indigeneity of a church. Based on a six-point Likert scale, the matrix is a self-assessment tool for churches to evaluate their progress from being a new church plant to becoming a reproducing church that is a leader in a church planting movement.

Carl Braaten and Robert Jenson have observed, “Indeed, the church may be said now to be replaying the struggles of the most ancient church, occasioned exactly by the blurring of the line” (1996:1). Any movement toward a future missiological encounter with religious others would be deficient if it did not include a historical analysis of relevant doctrines.
